The Alloy Products Group manufactures wear resistant overlay plate ranges under the Triten and Trimay brand names, although Trimay is currently only produced in Europe. Whilst both ranges provide excellent resistance to wear, there are some differences in the two types of material, which are essentially associated with their method of manufacture. Triten Overlay Plate is manufactured using the open-arc bulk welding process which is ideally suited to large volume, mass production and creates a consistent wear resistant material with a distinctive narrow weld bead. The higher rate of cooling associated with this process produces a finer grained overlay and minimises alloy dilution. Trimay Overlay Plate is produced using the submerged-arc bulk welding process, which is better suited to small batch work and therefore, in addition to manufacturing standard compositions, is often employed to create short runs of special overlays. The ‘as welded’ finish of Trimay is generally smoother than the Triten plate, although both materials polish to a ‘mirror’ finish in service. It has a wider weld bead and more pronounced stress relief cracking than the Triten plate.
